Pediatric IV sedation is a very effective sedation method for children who are having a complex procedure, have extreme dental anxiety or have trouble cooperating during treatment. It is delivered intravenously directly into their bloodstream and takes effect very quickly. We will monitor your child during their visit to ensure their safety, and they may not be able to remember their appointment. If you are interested in making IV sedation a part of your child’s visit with our orthodontist, there are some things you will need to do.
- Inform us of any allergies or medical conditions your child has and any medications they are taking, including vitamins.
- If your child becomes ill, please let us know. We may recommend rescheduling their appointment.
- Do not give your child anything by mouth after midnight before their visit.
- Make sure your child is wearing comfortable clothing.
- If your child needs an inhaler, bring it with you to the appointment.
- Plan on remaining in the office during your child’s entire visit.
After your child’s appointment:
- Monitor your child closely, as they may be sleepy following their visit. If your child does want to sleep, place them on their side with their chin up.
- Watch your child for vomiting.
- Wake them up each hour and give them small sips of clear liquid to prevent dehydration.
- Their first meal should be light and easy to digest.
